Any Old Firearms Collectors
on GIM? Not pricey antiques, just older military weapons. I spent part of the day getting out my small collection of mil-surp rifles for a wipedown and inspection. The collection consists of a M38 Mosin-Nagant, M48 Yugo Mauser, SMLE #5, 1917 Remington and a Gewehr Commission rife (Gew88). I'm doing a restoration on the .30-06 Rem and I'm thinking of doing one on the Gew88.

Re: Any Old Firearms Collectors
Yeah AgMan, I am looking to buy a K98K 8mm Mauser when one comes up for sale.
Not too may around though that were not NATO modified or other models for other countries. Kiwi http://www.mausershooters.org/k98k/k98kframe.html |
Re: Any Old Firearms Collectors
Kiwi, I've been wanting a K98 Mauser as well. I could kick myself for not buying these mil-surp rifles back in the 70's, when they were dirt-cheap. Back then, the only interest I had in firearms were strictly hunting related. I couldn't hunt with a centerfire rifle, so no interest. Despite my concerns about obtaining a C&R license, I may eventually get one, so I can buy mil-surp rifles at a much better price than I can buying retail, at gun shops or gun shows.

Re: Any Old Firearms Collectors
My older firearms: Swiss K-31 (early 1950s production), Yugo SKS (circa 1970), Russian M-44 (1944), and a Russian Nagant model 1895 revolver (1944). I also have two black powder Colt reproduction revolvers. My Romanian WASR-10 was originally constructed in 1980 - would that be considered old? ;)
Here's my M-44. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q.../m44003rev.jpg From my mile-long wish list, I hope to get another type of SKS (Russian or Chinese) and a Russian 91/30. You should throw some pics of your collection on here Ag_man. I'm a sucker for gun pRon. |
Re: Any Old Firearms Collectors
I got a C&R FFL about 5-6 years ago. Once you have one of those, it is hard to avoid buying WWII rifles. Or even older. So I've got a MN 91/30, two MN M44's, a Finn M38, a SA Garand, a Rockolo M1 Carbine, two K-31's, an MAS 49/56, a Lee/Enfield Jungle Carbine, a 6.5mm Carcano, a Swedish M96, a Yugo M48, a Yugo SKS, and ..... maybe that's it. I feel like I'm missing something but it is too late at night to start turning on lights and opening safes!!
I like buying the old rifles and cleaning all the old cosmoline off them. It's like opening a present since you are never quite sure what you will find under there. And I reload for most of them so each new caliber is a new experience. I love AK's and AR's and FAL's but I wouldn't enjoy my collection nearly as much without all the old war veterans. Gregg |

Like you, I wish I'd bought more "stuff" when it was cheaper about 10 years ago. I missed out on the dirt cheap Swede Mausers 15-20 years ago, as with the super-cheap Finnish Mosin Nagant rifles (5 for $100). No more 3-for-$100 Turk Mausers or 3-for-$100 MN91/30 rifles (both of those were less than 10 years ago). |
Re: Any Old Firearms Collectors
Old is sometimes fun. I have a few pieces. I regret selling an H&R topbreak in .38 S&W that was discontinued before the turn of the last century.
Take care, Mod1 |
Re: Any Old Firearms Collectors
Kiwi, I don't know what your price range for a German K98K is, but you can get one here: http://www.mauser.org/rifles/K98k%20German/index.htm
I know some people don't think much of Mitchell's Mausers, but I bought my M48 from them, they didn't have K98's for sale then. I looked at a lot of used 8mm Mausers in gun shops and I didn't find one in better condition than the one I bought from Mitchell's ($299 + shipping. I think a got a fair deal and I'm going ahead and buy a K98 after the new year. |
